Do you love ice cream? Do you love animals? Then you’re going to love Funky Paws!
Happy Line is a company that creates unique toys, focusing on original characters with a Kawaii look. The client needed various graphic materials for their new toy line called Funky Paws, a fun toy that combines fruity ice creams with cute animals. The client’s goal was to create the world where these characters live, give each character a distinct personality, and develop key visual illustrations to promote the product.
The chosen style
The client chose “splash art”, a style very characteristic of current online video games like League of Legends
To develop the key visual illustrations, we needed to create the world where our characters would live. So, we started with the world called “Sweet Emporium”, which was envisioned as an ice cream factory-shop. We began with some references provided by the client and others that we drew inspiration from.
When sketching, we aimed for a colorful look, but adhered to a color palette that would help maintain a consistent visual identity.
This led us to the final result, where an enormous sundae cup with robotic arms creates the Funky Paws, and a multicolored fountain is the place where they live.
After developing the setting, we needed to give each Funky Paw a personality and determine where they would be within the Sweet Emporium. Guided by the client, we got to work and, using Carl Jung’s archetypes, we were able to shape the personality of each toy.
Bringing the Characters to Life.
Four artists in the studio brought these characters to life, designing a setting that would be interesting and reflect the nature of the Sweet Emporium. We aimed for a dynamic pose, with a strong line of action and a clear silhouette. Finally, in the composition of the Key Visual, we positioned the camera in an interesting frame, in line with the intention behind each character, always striving for balance and an engaging visual.
